Elm is renowned as a hard-wearing beautiful brown coloured wood. It was often used in chair making because of its durability. Unfortunately English Elm is rare and imports from other areas of Europe are often used in furniture making. It possesses a distinctive grain and is a popular wood for many furniture pieces. Elm has some unique properties. For example it will survive when placed in water or under the ground which resulted in Elm being the wood of choice for coffins. The construction of the fibres almost guarantee that wood will not split and so was often used in tool making such as sledgehammers
